Volunteer Spotlight: Jeff Gold

After years of asking the tough questions as an Associated Press reporter, Jeff Gold is now taking a turn in the spotlight—sharing his story in hopes of inspiring others to volunteer with Neptune Township EMS.

Jeff retired in the spring of 2020, making a list of hobbies and activities he wanted to pursue, including becoming a volunteer EMT. By year’s end, he was a certified EMT at Neptune First Aid Squad.

“It was like going back to college. I don’t have a medical background, so it was pretty exciting absorbing all this new information. I knew a few people on the squad already, which certainly helped get acclimated,” said Jeff.

Through the challenges and experiences of being an EMT, Jeff has gained valuable skills that extend beyond emergency response.

“It certainly refines your ability to work as a team and helps with communication skills, because very often, you’re talking to people who are in distress or pain. Each person has a unique challenge and you’ve got to figure out pretty quickly how to communicate with them,” Jeff added.

Jeff and his fellow volunteers not only respond to emergencies, but also aim to prevent potential incidents from occurring across the Township. One way they achieve this is by offering free CPR training and certification to local youth sports leagues, schools and other local organizations.

“By putting those skills out there, you are potentially saving a life,” he said.

In his spare time, Jeff also pursues therapy dog training. He and the dog he previously trained completed over 300 visits to institutions. Jeff and his current dog, Daisy, are preparing for their certification so they can begin visiting school, hospitals and nursing homes.

“Between EMT responsibilities, training dogs, golfing and traveling with my wife, I manage to keep reasonably busy,” said Jeff.

Neptune Township EMS, made up of three dedicated squads, is always on the lookout for new volunteers to join its ranks. No prior experience is required—training and gear are provided at no cost.

“Volunteering gives you an opportunity to make a real difference in somebody’s life. It’s a big responsibility, but it comes with a tremendous amount of satisfaction,” he added.
